ADAM KLEIN Opera Biography - florid In 1971, ADAM KLEIN of Setauket, N.Y., was the first boy to sing Yniold in PELLƒAS ET MƒLISANDE with Thomas Stewart and Judith Blegen at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, where he also appeared as Zweiter Knabe in DIE ZAUBERFL…TE with Stuart Burrows and Theodor Uppman. Since returning to the Met in 2000, he has performed Loge in DAS RHEINGOLD with Bryn Terfel and Eric Owens, Yaryshkin in THE NOSE with Paolo Szot, Opily Vezen in Z MRTVEHO DOMU directed by Patrice ChŽreau, the Witch in HANSEL AND GRETEL with Alice Coote and Christine Schaefer, Steva in JENUFA with Karita Mattila, Chekalinski in PIQUE DAME with Vladimir Galouzine, Chevalier Delaforce in DIALOGUES DES CARMƒLITES, Fyodor in WAR AND PEACE, Iskra in MAZEPPA, Third Japanese Envoy in LE ROSSIGNOL, Third Jew in SALOME and Count Elemer in ARABELLA with RenŽe Fleming. At the Met Klein has also understudied many other principal roles, including Gandhi in Philip Glass's SATYAGRAHA, Alwa and Maler/Neger in Berg's LULU, Tom Rakewell in THE RAKE'S PROGRESS, Mephistopheles in Busoni's DOKTOR FAUST, Grimoaldo in RODELINDA and Oedipus in Stravinsky's OEDIPUS REX. In 2010 he made his debut as Tristan in TRISTAN UND ISOLDE with Seattle Opera. Concert highlights include Siegmund in DIE WALK†RE (Act I) with the West Virginia Symphony and the Princeton University Orchestra; Tenor Solo/Doctor Marianus in Mahler's EIGHTH SYMPHONY with the Boston Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall; Sly in FAUSTUS, THE LAST NIGHT with the Radio Kamer Filharmonie at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Holland; and he holds the record for most solo appearances with the New York Choral Society. Klein, also a composer and songwriter, has written two operas: LEITHIAN, based on a story from The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien, which had its concert premieres in 2006 and 2007 in New York City; and GOLDIE LOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS, a short children's opera about tolerance based on the classic fairy tale.
