Teponazli (or teponatzli, or teponaztli): The name is Aztec; The English name is tongue drum. Many now gather dust in New Age attics, but they're really cool. Sort like a set of timpani in a small wooden box. They are played with soft rubber mallets, which one can make from superballs and round chopsticks. The upper one's tongues are bocote, the bottom one's teak — both from way back when I didn't know to buy sustainably harvested wood, or just scrounge. But the wood must be heavy. Sides are walnut.
Heard on Rockingham Cindy and The White Pilgrim, and The Old Grey Horse. Also used a lot in the Delays.
