This is my first jembe, made before I knew anything about using rope. The shell was carved from the trunk of an ornamental European cherry tree in Belle Terre, Long Island around 1980. The head is goatskin, from Shorty Palmer. Box painted by Patricia Windrow; can double as a checkers or chess board. Or a drink table.
