Adam Klein was introduced to traditional Appalachian music at age 17 when he first attended a concert at the Carter Family Memorial Music Center in Hiltons, Virginia. (The Center was founded by the late Janette Carter, daughter of A.P. and Sara Carter, two thirds of the original Carter Family, widely known as the First Family of Country Music -- but Janette's Center preserves Old-Time and Bluegrass music, not what the mass media call "Country Music.") In the year prior to this concert, Adam had built his first dulcimers, following instructions from a book. From age 18 to age 25, he headed a stringband called Zeng, which concertized in his home county of Suffolk, New York, and he built over 25 dulcimers as well as banjos, autoharps and other instruments, which he sold and played in the concerts. He and his brother Moondi produced the album "Me and My Brother" which they sold directly to the public. (Moondi, a founder of Zeng, went on to form several bands elsewhere, notably Rock Creek and Chesapeake, the latter having recorded three CDs for Sugar Hill Records.) In 1985 Adam went away to graduate school and on to a career in opera, and Zeng was no more. But recently, circumstances have allowed him time and opportunity to revisit these other forms of music, and even once again to build instruments. And most recently, he and Constance Cook formed a duo called Little Blue Heron which performs music of England, New England, Appalachia and other traditions. They are now selling their own first album, a CD called No Bee Without the Rose, directly to the public. Through Constance's music teaching job at Louis F. Angelo Elementary School in Brockton, MA, she and Adam fostered something of a Bones Movement among the students, with over 60 children grades 1 through 6 owning and playing these instruments of ancient ancestry, made by Adam. Now at Maria Hastings School in Lexington MA, itŐs starting again, although Hastings seems to be more of a jaw harp school. He currently resides in a small house in the wilds of New Jersey.
